Whether you’re on a budget or not, save money by letting the fairies turn trash into treasure for you! I love looking for an excuse to hit the thrift stores. Searching for unusual fairy garden containers was my goal the day I found this cute little nightstand for under ten dollars. Because it’s made of wood, I sprayed several coats of clear polyurethane to protect it, (both outside and inside the drawer as well). Several holes drilled through the bottom of the drawer will allow for drainage. Because I needed the drawer pulled out part way for planting, I needed to counter balance the weight. A brick placed at the very back of the drawer before adding soil did the trick.
An old teacup with a hole drilled in the bottom was planted with a bit of selaginella moss and topped with a fairy. A pair of scratched up reading glasses found new life when incorporated into the nightstand scenario, along with a sweet porcelain kitty. I kept the drawer planting very simple with Baby’s Tears and two pink splash hypoestes. A rock pathway seems to lead towards a secret entrance to fairyland.
My inspiration for this garden came from thinking about what happens when we doze off at night. When the fairies come out to play and delight in amusing themselves with human sized objects. So, a second hand cast-off and a bit of imagination can combine to create a whimsical garden. Just add fairies and it truly turns trash into treasure!
